I recall parents and school teachers who had these devilish implements, and they stung like the dickens. The construction was much more substantial than the thin plywood typically seen today. If you’ve seen the so called Cracker Barrel paddle or felt it, you know what the norm was in the “good old days.” Unfortunately, Cracker Barrel no longer sells this item. Perhaps they realized what they were being used for? The Cracker Barrel paddle I reference is from the collection of Elizabeth Burns, a Phoenix-based disciplinarian.
